Procedures to Receive Treatment at Medical Facilities and Insurance
Medical facilities in Japan largely consist of private clinics
and general hospitals. To receive medical attention you will have
to apply for first visit procedures. In general, applications for
first visit patients are accepted in the morning. If you have health
insurance, you will have to submit your insurance certificate at
the time of application.
Everyone must be medically insured in Japan, this regulation also
applies to foreign residents. Except for those foreign residents
who have health insurance through work for themselves and their
dependents, as well as those who are recipients of welfare, foreign
residents are required to join the National Health Insurance Program
if they are staying in Japan for one year or longer. For more information
concerning the National Health Insurance Program, see here(Click!).

About Hospitalization
When being hospitalized for an operation, treatment or examination,
preparations are necessary. In some cases, you may have to wait
a few days for a vacant bed. We suggest you check the types of food
and available facilities such as a shower while you prepare things
you might need during your stay. At the very least, you will need
pajamas, towels, toothbrush and toothpaste, slippers and cups. In
big hospitals, many of these things are sold in the hospital store.
There are various types of rooms available, including private, two-person
and large (4- to 8-person) rooms. As a general rule, it costs more
to stay in a private and two-person room.
